Royal Bafokeng
2010 World Cup Stadiums – Royal Bafokeng Stadium (Rustenburg)
South Africa’s
Royal Bafokeng tribe made a name for themselves in the 1860’s when a remarkable act of foresight and collective sacrifice led to them acquiring what may be considered the world’s greatest body of ore, or put more simply, one of the world’s largest platinum mines.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium is named after the famous tribe because they were able to fund the construction of the entire stadium without any monetary support from outside sources.
The stadium was first opened in 1999, but has recently finished renovations that have increased the seating capacity from 38 000 to 42 000, added new scoreboards, as well as new floodlights and a PA system. These upgrades were completed in time for the 2009 Confederations Cup and the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace was able to host 4 matches.
