2010 World Cup Stadiums – Peter Mokaba Complex (Polokwane)

pm005

When the time cameto make decisions about a stadium for Polokwane, the capital of the Limpopo Province, South Africa’s officials decided that it would be best to build a new stadium, rather than expand on the already existing Peter Mokaba Stadium. The result of this decision is situated adjacent to the old stadium and rather confusingly named after the same anti-apartheid activist, Peter Mokaba. The new stadium has been called the Peter Mokaba Complex.

The new soccer stadium can comfortably seat up to 46 000 people in 4 grandstands around the ground. A drastic improvement on the old stadium which only has one grandstand and three grass banks for seating.

In anticipation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Polokwane is also building a new convention centre, with a 250-room hotel, as well as encouraging companies to build other forms of lodging, such as bed & breakfasts. They are also looking to improve the roads and other transport systems in the city in hopes of making everything more accessible to tourists.
