Mbombela Stadium
2010 World Cup Stadiums – Mbombela Stadium (Mpumalanga)
Despite the fact that there will be no knockout games played at this ground, Mbombela Stadium is likely to be one of the most popular 2010 FIFA World Cup Stadiums outside of Cape Town and Johannesburg. Not only is it a brand new world class stadium, but it is also the stadium closest to the Kruger National Park. Visitors and players fortunate enough to be staying in the nearby town of Nelspruit will be able to make trips into the Kruger on days when there is no soccer being played, allowing them to see some serious game outside of the soccer stadiums.
The stadium itself was built especially for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, seats up to 44 000 people and has a very unique feature you’ll not see anywhere else in the world, the 18 roof supports are made to resemble giraffes, very appropriate considering the stadiums proximity to South Africa’s premiere national park. The Mbombela Stadium is intended to be the centerpiece of a proposed sports district just outside Nelspruit.
