2010 World Cup Stadiums – Loftus Versfeld (Tshwane/Pretoria)

loftusLoftus Versfeld is one of the oldest standing stadiums in South Africa. It was first used for sports fixtures in 1906 and in 1923 the first concrete stand was erected, originally it could only hold 2000 people. Since then Loftus has been regularly upgraded, reaching its current capacity of 45 000 in 1984 when the north pavilion was upgraded. The constant improving of the sports ground meant that there were only a few upgrades needed to meet FIFA’s requirements for a World Cup stadium, these being the lights, sound, scoreboard and the development of media areas at the bottom of the west stand. Naturally this is the first stadium ready for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Loftus Versfeld has already served as the venue for many international soccer matches. Brazil, Italy and USA played their group matches there during the 2009 Confederation Cup. It was also the location of Bafana Bafana’s (South Africa’s soccer team) first international success when they beat Sweden 1-0.
