You can wait until you die to go to heaven or you could try visiting Mpumalanga. Words like paradise, majestic and breathtaking are often used when talking about the subtropical province. Made up of deep river filled valleys, waterfalls, lush forests, interesting rock formations, caves and culture, there is no doubt that this is the most beautiful place in all of South Africa. Oh, there’s also a ridiculous amount of animal and bird life that you can spend ours watching and still not even see half of.
Mpumalanga’s history is mainly focused around the gold rush in the late 1800s. People started finding veins of gold in various places around the provinces and inevitably shanty towns formed, then developed into fully functioning towns and eventually some of them moved on to other things, but the sensible ones among them knew that there was more than just “gold in them there hills”. The natural beauty of the land has kept people in Mpumalanga for generations and to this day draws thousands of tourists each year.
Mpumalanga Attractions
People come from far and wide to visit the various tourist attractions available; foremost amongst them being the Kruger National Park. This world famous game reserve is the largest in South Africa and is home to thousands of animals and birds. People can spend their days driving around inside the park, visiting the various waterholes and bird hides, hoping to see as much as they can. Then when the sun goes down and the body gets weary you can lie your head down in one of the various luxury accommodations.
Another must see attraction in Mpumalanga is the Blyde’s River Canyon. Inside this canyon you will find some of the most spectacular views and rock formations you’ll ever have the pleasure of seeing. Not to mention it is home to every species of South African primate, as well as the typical mass of birdlife.
The Sudwala Caves in the Mpumalanga Lowveld is another wonderful experience. Inside the system of caves are spectacular rock formations, which can be seen on one of the hour long tours, going 600m into the caves and 150m underground. The Sudwala Caves are a total of 30kms long, however, only the 600m are open to the public.
