Polokwane
Although Polokwane is not thought of as a choice getaway location, it is a particularly convenient spot to stay if you’re looking to explore some of South Africa’s neighboring countries, the busier and more expensive cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg, or the Kruger National Park. Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Swaziland are all great tourist destinations, are within easy reach of Polokwane, but not of each other. The city of Polokwane, which is the capital of the Limpopo Province, is very modern, with excellent accommodation available, pleasantly warm weather and friendly people, which is really all you need in a holiday destination.
This is not to say that Polokwane lacks things to do, not 5kms to the south of the city is the Polokwane Nature Reserve, which offers visitors a range of scenic walks and the chance to see some of South Africa’s wildlife. One of Polokwane’s greatest attractions is the Bakone Malapa Museum. This living museum, and national monument, is of a reconstructed northern Sotho village and has tribesman living and practicing long standing African traditions in it. The idea is that it will teach visitors about the traditions of the African people. Do not miss the chance to see the Bakone Malapa Museum, you will regret it.
Inside the town you can find the Hugh Exton Photographic Museum, a very enlightening experience that will teach you all about the origins of the town of Polokwane. The museum holds 22 000 glass negatives depicting the founding years of the city. Polokwane also has its own 18-hole golf course, which is well kept and typically beautiful of something situated in the South African landscape.
