The Limpopo Province is the northern most province in South Africa and one of the top tourist destinations in the country. It is conveniently accessed from Pretoria or Johannesburg along the Great North Road and it shares its borders with Mozabique, Zimbabwe and Botswana, all beautiful African getaways. Its role as the gateway into Africa is one of the major reasons that tourists come into Limpopo, but this should by no means deter people from visiting the province for the sake of seeing its natural beauty, rich history and cultural relics. The Limpopo River is what gives the province its name and brings life to the animal, plant and bird life in the area. The Limpopo River Valley flourishes with wildlife all year round and the many game reserves in the area are spectacular places to see South Africa’s “Big 5” and the other game and bird life in the region.

Two particularly popular attractions to be found in Limpopo are the Makapansgat Valley and Mapungubwe National Park, both are UNESCO World Heritage sites and both played a key role in South Africa’s cultural history. In the Mapungubwe National Park relics were found that have led historians to believe that the Mapungubwe tribe was the largest and most complex tribe in Africa, had made contact with Egypt and various countries in Asia and were skilled in metalworking, far more so than was originally thought African people of that time ever were. The discovery of these relics was made in 1932, however, it was kept secret until after the 1994 political elections, due to the country’s tense political climate at the time.

Areas like Waterberg (Water Mountain) and Soutpansberg (Salt Pan Mountain) are two of the most beautiful and inviting places in the Limpopo Province, possibly in the entire country. Both are populated by a wide variety of animal and bird life and are also home to the Baobab tree, a slightly odd looking tree that can be seen in the Savannah areas of southern Africa. The Soutpansberg region has the highest concentration of leopards in the world, so if you’re interested in seeing these notoriously hard to find animals, this is the place to be.

The capital of the Limpopo Province is Polokwane. It is the perfect place to start your journey into South Africa’s northern areas or into the countries surrounding South Africa. It is a modern city, well equipped to host visitors and can provide guests with a variety of entertainment, foremost amongst those being history museums and nature reserves.
