Durban

Durban is the major city in the KwaZulu Natal Province, mainly because it is the largest and most active port city in South Africa, but also largely due to the fact that has fantastic warm weather and beautiful warm watered, sandy beaches. As with most coastal towns in South Africa, Durban is a surfer’s paradise. The water is warm, beaches are white and sandy, the waves are good waves and there are plenty of locations to thin out the crowds.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that nice beaches are all that Durban has to offer. The Gateway Shopping Centre is one of the greatest shopping experiences in the South Africa. There are hundreds of meters of shops and restaurants inside the centre and at the one end there is a skate park (designed by Tony Hawk) and South Africa’s only man made standing wave.

Durban is also home to uShaka Marine World, a complex attraction that is both a place for entertaining and nurturing. uShaka’s main attribute is that it is a massive indoor and outdoor aquarium, but it also has a restaurant inside an old ship, daily shows performed by some of the animals and their trainers, and lastly it has a massive water park with various slides. To top all of this off, it is located less than a stones throw away from the beach.

Water sports are a very popular activity in Durban; however, the city is crazy about pretty much all of South Africa’s major sports. There is a stadium being built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the Sharks, the local rugby team, are avidly supported by all the residence of KwaZulu Natal, wherever they go in the country.
