George

George is one of the major towns in South Africa’s Western Cape. It is the commercial hub of the Garden Route, a popular tourist attractions filled with places to stay and things to do. Although George is considered to have a small town feel about it, it is certainly not as busy as the nearby Cape Town, it has a sophisticated infrastructure with many business and shopping chains, conference facilities and many places looking to accommodate tourists.

Its convenient location along the Garden Route, which has amongst other things South Africa’s largest continuous forest, also makes it an ideal place to stay if you’re interested in making trips into the Tsitsikamma National Park or Cango Caves.

George Tourist Attractions

George is home to many world-class golf courses. Foremost amongst those is the famous Fancourt Golf Course, which hosted the 2003 President’s Cup as well as many other high profile golf tournaments. In December every year George hosts top national rugby sevens teams for the annual South African Sevens, one of the tournaments in the IRB Sevens World Series.

The Outeniqua Choo Tjoe is South Africa’s last running mixed steam train, with one end to be found in George. The steam train runs along the preserved Outeniqualand Railway, from George to Mossel Bay. The train used to go all the way to Knysna but over the years the railway has been damaged and will now only go as far as Mossel Bay. Visitors can make their way to the Outeniqua Transport Museum to learn about the old railway and see some of the trains that it supported.

As is the case with most of South Africa’s towns along the coast, George has many hikes and mountain biking trails in the surrounding mountains and forests. These trail can boast some of the most breathtaking views to be found anywhere in the country and adventurers can also hope to see some of the wildlife that inhabits the area.
