Cango Caves

The Cango Caves is one of the top ten most visited locations in South Africa and for good reason. It has taken millions of years for the caves to be formed out of the limestone rock and it is now home to some of the most beautiful rock formations in the world. Runoff rainwater and carbon dioxide from dead plant matter both run through the caverns of the Cango Caves and have resulted in the formation of rock features known as stalactites and stalagmites, rock spikes that come out of the floor and roof of the caves, at some points even joining to form massive pillars.

In the early years after the discovery of the caves people had to explore in the near darkness of poor lighting, but today the caves are well illuminated and have incorporated skillfully placed coloured lights, much to the pleasure of all who visit.

Tourists visiting the caves are able to choose the extent to which they want to explore. For those only interested in seeing the power of nature and the incredible rock formations you can enter the main cavern and a few others a little further in, but for those after something a little more adventurous you can go deeper into the caves, to a more technical path, and feel what its like to have thousands of tons of rock pressing down upon your mind. The more technical route requires cavers to climb a steep ladder and crawl some fairly tight spaces, but the feeling of accomplishment that comes with this is well worth it.
