Tiffindell Ski Resort
Snow, although not unheard of in South Africa, is not a common occurrence. There is usually a light dusting on the higher peaks along the coastline and escarpment, but nothing substantial enough to even consider South Africa as a place for a skiing holiday. That was until the development of the Tiffendell Ski Resort, South Africa’s first and only ski resort. The resort can be found on the Ben McDhui peak (the highest one in the Eastern Cape) 2720m above sea level. There is enough natural snow in this area, thanks to the colder winter weather, plus there are snow making machines that ensure snow for at least 100 days per year.
The resort can accommodate up to 144 guests, within 100m of the slope. Guests can choose from a range of accommodation, from luxury wooden chalets to budget rooms with shared bathrooms. For the desperate and slightly insane, camping is also an option. The main lodge has all of your shopping and dining needs covered. You can buy gear for the slopes, rent equipment, find a top instructor to help you learn and when you’re exhausted from your incredible day on the slopes you can eat at one of the world class restaurants or get a drink at the highest pub in Africa, Ice Station 2720.
Tiffindell Ski Resort plays host to the annual South African Ski & Snowboard Championship.
