Addo Elephant Park
Addo Elephant Park is one of the most easily accessible national parks in South Africa. The park is situated an hour drive from the city of Port Elizabeth, a particularly scenic drive along the Sunshine Coast and into the rolling hills of the Sunday’s River Valley. The park was originally established to protect the majestic grey elephants that were being poached in the region. At the time of its establishment there were only 11 elephants left in the area. There are now more than 450 elephants thriving in the park, as well as thousands of other animals in the form of lions, leopards, buffalo, rhino, jackals, plenty of species of antelope and of course an incredible array of beautiful birdlife. Already the third largest national park in the country, Addo is currently in the planning stages of expanding its boundaries and bringing more animals into the safety of the reserve.
While not as famous as the Kruger National Park, Addo feels less like a zoo and more like an African getaway. Guests spend can spend their days driving around the park in search of spectacular sightings, or relax as they are guided through the park on one of the many game drives. Another major attraction is the guided walks which take place in the park. You’re accompanied by a guide who knows the park and the wildlife better than you know you home.
