Kimberley
Over the years Kimberley has become synonymous with diamonds and the Big Hole. This isn’t really a surprising turn of events because anyone who has been to Kimberley will not easily forget the 17 hectare hole with its deepest point reaching a kilometer into the earth. Coming across the Big Hole, which can be found in the centre of the town, for the first time is quite a humbling experience. A total of 22.5 million tons of earth was moved out of it using only picks and shovels, 3 tons of this was made up of diamonds. This just goes to show how desperate the fight for diamonds was and also what man was cable of doing with basically his bare hands.
The Big Hole of today is not as deep as it once was, people threw debris into the hole once it was abandoned and underground water sources have also filed the hole a bit. However, the Big Hole of Kimberley still maintains its must see status, having been converted into an open air museum with a brilliant lookout point right over the hole. Taking a tour of the De Beers diamond mine is definitely another must see in Kimberley.

Once a place of blood, sweat and tears as people slaved the days away trying to strike it rich, with many coming away empty handed, Kimberly is now a modern town with all the accompanying bells and whistles.
