The Mpumalanga Lowveld has three major attractions, Nelspruit, the province’s capital city, the Lowveld Botanical Garden and the Sudwala Caves.

The city of Nelspruit is perfectly situated if you’re going to be exploring the Lowveld. It is close to the Lowveld Botanical Garden and the Sudwala Caves, as well as being the closes major city to the Kruger National Park. Not only is the town a good place to use as a base as you explore the Lowveld, it also offers its own attraction in the form of a fully developed shopping mall, with its own 8 theatre cinema, a casino and an entertainment area.

Lowveld Botanical Garden, Mpumalanga

You can find the Lowveld Botanical Garden just outside the own of Nelspruit. The garden is almost 160 hectares in size, has 600 species of naturally occurring plant life and a further 2000 species that have been brought into the garden over time. The garden can also boast an African rainforest, as well as an enormous collection of ancient cycads. The Crocodile and Nels River are two dominant features in the Lowveld Botanical Garden, both entering in their own spectacular style and meeting inside the garden to form a peaceful pool.

Sudwala Caves, Mpumalanga

The Sudwala Caves have been 3000 million years in the making and are regarded as the oldest known caves in the world. The system of caves stretches over 30km in length with only 600m of that being accessible to the public, but those 600m are an absolute treat for visitors. You’ll be blown away by the various rock formations inside the caves and the presence of so much rock surrounding you as you venture 150m deep into the earth on one of the hour long tours. For the more daring, you can venture 2000m into the cave to a crystal chamber filed with aragonite crystals, a truly unforgettable experience.
