Johannesburg

From its earliest days, when the largest gold field in the world was discovered here, Johannesburg has been a city full of activity and fast paced lifestyles. People go to Johannesburg (also called Jozi) to make money and live the high life that is represented so well in Hollywood movies. Recently businesses have been moving out of the Johannesburg CBD, but it is still the largest employment centre in South Africa. Although there is a lot of talk about the crime in the area, sensible travelers who stay out of dark alleys and just keep their wits about them will not have any trouble. In light of the coming 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa there have been some recent undertakings dedicated to the reduction of crime and the improved safety of residence and tourists.

Johannesburg Tourism

Although not really thought of as a tourist destination, the constant stream of traffic through the city’s airport as people head to the Kruger National Park, or down to Cape Town has inspired the creation of some exciting tourist attractions. There are now museums, such as the Apartheid Museum, where people can learn about the struggles of South Africa’s past. There is also the famous Johannesburg Zoo, not the same as the beautiful National Parks that the country boasts, but definitely worth a visit. Just south of the CBD you can find Gold Reef City, a large amusement park that draws thousands of people each year.

Johannesburg is filled with South African urban culture. It lines the streets of the city, flows through the clubs at night and can even be seen decorating the various hotels and restaurants. The Johannesburg Civic Theatre is a great place to see some of this culture in action, as is a tour into one of the former local townships such as Soweto.

If you’re finding the city to be a bit overwhelming then you can do as many Jo’burgers do and head out to the Magaliesburg mountain range for a bit of hiking and picnicking coupled with some spectacular views. Another option is the Cradle of Humankind, just 25km north of the city. A little further away, but possibly the biggest reason tourists come to South Africa at all, is the Kruger National Park, a must see for all visitors.
